One of the things I love most about my job is working alongside some truly talented people and being able to recommend their services and products to clients.
Last week I was fortunate enough to visit Whitehead Design’s workshop in Long Eaton. This family run business, established over 30 years ago, is situated in the traditional upholstered furniture centre of the UK and produces chairs, sofas, upholstered headboards and screens of the highest quality.
Each one of its frames is made from kiln-dried beech or birch and is guaranteed for 25 years. Once the frame has been constructed, and the fabric cut and joined (note the intricate pattern matching and the over-locking of all the raw edges below) the frame is ready to be dressed.
Hessian and horsehair are used in abundance and whilst feathers are still the filling of choice when it comes to seat cushions, foam and foam wraps are available for those short on time with regard to the daily ‘plumping’ that feather cushions require.
Other than the people cutting out the fabric templates and the ladies responsible for sewing each set together, the individual pieces are dressed and upholstered by the same person. Whilst this is more time consuming it ensures a consistency to the whole process that you won’t find on a production line.
The finished pieces are truly stunning:
More importantly, GMW Interiors’ clients can now choose their very own upholstered pieces of furniture handmade in the UK. All models shown on the website can be altered to suit the needs of individual clients and fabric choices are left entirely to the client, making this a truly bespoke service. The team at Whitehead Design also offer a rebuild and reupholstery service for existing pieces.
If this is something you’re considering as part of a project please get in touch and if you’d like to visit the showroom to see the pieces ‘in person’ we’d be happy to arrange a visit.
